Briefly: Mississippi River leaders to vote on new compact, block water export to the arid West

The Associated Press reports that this week, mayors from 10 states along the Mississippi River are expected to vote on whether to support a new compact that would block water export from the river corridor. While the export of water from the water-rich Mississippi River Basin to states in the arid West has always been impractical, officials worry that the idea hasn’t gone away. A compact would protect the river’s water levels and ecology and resolve conflict among the river states, officials say.
